What I'm Reading: The Jinn-Bot of Shantiport

I've been meaning to read The Jinn-Bot of Shantiport, by Samit Basu, for quite a while. I enjoyed his book The City Inside, and when I saw Jinn-Bot was out, I decided to give it a go.

This book was a lot more fun than I was expecting. There are monkey antics and bots with tender feelings and a space adventurer/super hero walking the streets.

As much fun as it is, Samit Basu didn't shy away from weighty subjects. This book also very much explores the ideas of found family, revolution, family legacy, destiny, personhood, and bots' rights.

There's a through line of the Aladdin story. There are bot death matches. There is a love story and political intrigue.

Even with so much going on, it all just works. This was a book I very much enjoyed reading through 'til the end.
